I always love a call from a damsel in distress.
A few weeks ago Vickie Dickson, the owner of the very successful “Vickie’s Specialty Shop” in Smiths Falls, called to see if I could help her improve the photos of her clothing and accessories on her website.
She carries hundreds of items that change frequently and she and her staff need to be able to quickly and easily photograph dresses, purses and jewelry almost daily as new stock comes in.
None of them had much experience. They were using a tiny Point-and-Shoot camera they bought from the “expert” at Walmart. The built-in flash was turning out flat, poorly-coloured photos with ugly shadows in behind – hardly what would make anyone want to purchase the item.
After some consultation at the store and some phone time with Pat Miller from Henry’s Cameras in Kanata, we set Vickie and her staff up with a mini “studio” in the back of her store.
The Sony camera is easy to use, yet still adjustable to produce sharp, clear and accurate colours and was less than $300 (there was no need for a more expensive DSLR). A couple of background stands, some seamless paper and a sturdy tripod and they were “good to go”.

Vickie and her customers are very happy with the new quality of her photos – it makes shopping on Vickie’s website that much easier.
