Teeny-tiniest lending library ever???

It’s all my mother’s fault that I am a book fanatic. She started taking me to the library to borrow books when I was quite young. She told me that ‘books are your friends’.  And she was absolutely correct. I’m never bored or lonely because I always have a book nearby.

Nowadays, I find the best books through so many sources – the classic town library, my favourite local bookstore, online book stores, downloads for my e-reader, and self-published e-books from a variety of websites.

But this week I discovered the ‘hands-down’ cutest, tiniest, most ‘tickle your fancy’ book source EVER!  Here’s a photo of what I came across as we turned onto the road leading to the dump near our cottage in the Haliburton area.  I found this little treasure right next to all the group mailboxes for the Kennisis Lake folks.

Not sure who came up with this idea – but it’s a winner in so many ways. The rules are simple – “take a book and leave a book”.  No dumping here – that happens further down the road.  What a fun way to connect with others in what’s pretty much a secret ritual. no crowds here – just one book-lover at a time.

I’m thinking that every neighbourhood could benefit from a mini library just like this.  Gotta think about the best location in my area, since there’s no dump close at hand that everyone uses regularly. Post your comments about great locations that come to mind in your area. Can we get a teeny-tiny library movement going and growing?

  1. How about at Lower Reach park near the playground? Moms who can’t make it to the library could certainly take advantage of this as they bring their children to play

  2. Hope – that’s a great location idea. Maybe this is something that the library might like to get involved with as well.
