How to stay standing – A Winter Boot Advisory –

Have you ever fallen on ice?  It’s bad enough on skates – but even worse when you’re just strolling down a street.

Did you know that over 21,000 people in Ontario were sent to hospital due to falls on ice?

In this photo you’ll notice an interesting rig worn by folks who tested winter boots for safety on ice.

The scary results were that after testing 98 styles of boots. ONLY 9 had enough grip for slippery conditions.

Here’s a link to the article about the testing and the results for the 9 pair that earned a ‘single snowflake’ rating for the best grip on ice.  Worth checking out NOW – keep an eye you might even get a pair on sale and be all ready for next winter.

Alternatively – you can look for a good pair of ice grippers that attach to your boots.  They aren’t all created equal.  I personally recommend Yak Trax or Due North traction aids.

Grippers work well – BUT they do require putting on and off.  That’s definitely not as simple as slipping on a pair of boots.  I always have a spare pair of grippers in my car – just in case.

What advice do you have to offer for boots?  Share any stories or tips that would help others in the comment section below.

Stay safe and upright for the rest of the winter.
