With Remembrance Day approaching we’ll be seeing lots of veterans at cenotaph ceremonies with medals proudly displayed on their chests. These medals are an important part of the veteran’s and the family’s history. (That’s my Dad taking the Remembrance Day salute representing the RCAF in Perth a couple of years ago.)
But what happens when Grandad is no longer with us and several members of the family all want the medals?
You’ve probably seen beautiful “Memory Frames” created by talented framers like Amy Blair at The Gilded Corner. These are wonderful for displaying medals and other memorabilia. In fact, we had one made from Lianne’s Dad’s gloves, belt and epaulettes. Her brother has it hanging in his home.
That’s great but it doesn’t solve the problem of several siblings all wanting the medals. After all, there is only one set.
A few years ago, one of our clients wondered if we could photograph medals and do something with them and an old photo her Dad from World War II. That way each member of the family could have their own keepsake.
Medals aren’t the easiest thing to photograph. Shiny surfaces and fine detail just don’t mix. However, with careful lighting and a bit of Photoshop magic, it can be done. We took the old photo and combined it with the image of the medals and created a commemorative keepsake for each family member.
