I’m always amazed at how people in business will spend thousands of dollars on their company “branding”. Things like logos, colours, decor, signage and yet not have a professional version of their personal “brand” – their business portrait.
Here’s an excerpt from a blog by Oscar Del Santo via Daniel Schawbel
“…get the best possible photo of yourself. For if logos are quintessential to commercial brands, photos are quintessential to personal ones. Even in the case of people who are already acquainted with you in a personal or professional capacity, pictures – when they display a blend of originality, quality, artistic merit and manage to capture the essence of what you stand for – send a powerful message about you and your brand that colors the perception other parties will have of you across the board. Underestimate the importance of a portrait picture at your own peril.”
Here’s the top 5 reasons we hear why people don’t update their business portrait:
5. I like my picture from 1995 (so what if my hair hasn’t been that colour for 18 years)
4. People recognize that picture. (They may recognize the picture, but would they recognize YOU)
3. No one pays attention to my picture on my business card (Then why do you have it there?)
2. “I don’t take a good picture”. My response – “But I DO take a good picture, and that’s why you come to me!”
1. I need to lose weight.
Yes that’s right, that’s the number one reason. But with the proper camera angle and lighting and little bit of my retouching magic (I have a special “Pounds-Be-Gone” filter in Photoshop) you can look the way you want without having to sweat in the gym!
